Doha: The Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding announced the initial screening process for the nominations submitted for the award in its tenth edition for 2024, which amounted to 280 nominations from 35 countries around the globe, with the participation of individuals and institutions concerned with translation. Official Spokesperson and Media Advisor for the Award Dr. Hanan Al Fayyad said that, in 2024, the committee received 195 nominations from 17 Arab countries, and 85 nominations from 18 non-Arab countries. The number of nominations in the single book category reached 209 nominations, distributed among 164 individuals and 45 institutions. The number of nominations in the achievement category reached 71, distributed among 38 individuals and 33 institutions. The nominated works include various fields of human sciences, most notably: literature, Islamic studies, philosophy, social sciences, political science, and history. In the award's tenth edition, the French language w as selected as the main language (along with English) in the single books category after it was selected in 2017. In achievement category, Balochi, Tatar, Hungarian, and Yoruba were selected as sub-languages, in addition to the two main languages. These languages are selected in order to stimulate translation efforts from and into the Arabic language in the countries that speak these languages, and encourage the continuity of acculturation between the societies of these countries and the Arab societies, Al Fayyad said. Launched in 2015, the Sheikh Hamad Award for Translation and International Understanding seeks to honor translators and acknowledge their role in strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation amongst peoples and nations of the world.
