Beirut: Spokesman for the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), Dany Ghafary, called on all parties to de-escalate and return to a cessation of hostilities in southern Lebanon.
According to Qatar News Agency, Ghafary stated that 7,500 UNIFIL troops from 48 countries are actively engaged in their duties south of the Litani River, in line with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1701. He highlighted the ongoing military escalation and exchanges of fire across the Blue Line since March 2.
The UNIFIL spokesman reported more than 800 deaths and over 1,900 injuries in Lebanon since the start of the Israeli escalation on March 2, noting the displacement of more than 800,000 people. Approximately 120,000 of these displaced individuals are currently residing in shelters.
Ghafary affirmed that UNIFIL forces are tasked with monitoring and recording violations, submitting reports to the Security Council, facilitating humanitarian aid delivery, and protecting civilian populations.
He condemned attacks on UNIFIL forces in southern Lebanon, mentioning a recent shooting incident targeting the UN peacekeeping forces. He urged all parties to ensure the safety and security of peacekeepers at all times.
Concluding his remarks to QNA, Ghafary noted that, per the Security Council decision, UNIFIL's mandate has been renewed for the final time, with the mission ending on December 31, 2026, and withdrawal beginning in 2027. He emphasized the force's commitment to fulfilling its duties until the end of its mandate.
