Washington: US President Donald Trump announced an extension of the cease-fire with Iran, stating that the decision was made following a request from Pakistan. This extension is intended to provide Iran the opportunity to propose a permanent resolution to the ongoing conflict.
According to Qatar News Agency, Trump disclosed that the request to extend the cease-fire came from Pakistan's army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He emphasized that the US military would maintain its blockade and remain ready while awaiting Iran's proposal. Trump communicated this directive via a statement on Truth Social.
In a message on X, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his hope for continued adherence to the cease-fire by both the United States and Iran. Sharif urged both parties to reach a comprehensive peace agreement in the upcoming talks scheduled in Islamabad, aimed at permanently resolving the conflict. He also expressed gratitude to Trump for accepting Pakistan's request to extend the cease-fire, which he believes will facilitate ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Earlier, the United States and Iran had agreed on a 14-day cease-fire during discussions in Islamabad. However, the talks did not produce significant progress, prompting Trump to implement a blockade of Iranian ports to exert additional pressure on Tehran.
