5-Magnitude Earthquake Hits Shiveluch Volcano in Kamchatka in Eastern Russia

An earthquake measuring 5 on the Richter scale struck the Shiveluch volcano in Kamchatka, eastern Russia.

The Geophysical Service of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported that that a 5 magnitude earthquake struck the area of the Shiveluch volcano at a depth of two kilometers, and was felt by people in the village of Kliuchi.

On Sunday, the meteorologists recorded an earthquake near the Shiveluch volcano.

The Shiveluch volcano erupted on April 11 and scattered a cloud of ash over a large area of the Kamchatka Peninsula, which posed a threat to the safety of flights over the region.

In recent weeks, Kamchatka has witnessed a number of earthquakes, ranging in magnitude from 4 to 6 magnitude.

The Kamchatka Peninsula is located above the Pacific Ring of Fire - a region that witnesses major seismic and volcanic activity.
