A Parliamentary Committee Sets An Action Plan

The Parliamentary Committee for Combating Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances has set an action plan for the coming period.

The committee stated in a press conference: It is no secret to anyone the seriousness of the spread of the phenomenon of abuse and trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, which are no less dangerous and have effects than terrorism and have become a threat to the security, economic, social and health system of Iraq, indicating that despite the enactment of Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Law No. (50) for the year 2017 in addition to other previous laws and the creation of a special directorate for drug control and taking a number of measures, however, the reports of the competent authorities and the results of research and studies related to drugs showed an increase in cases of abuse and trafficking in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.

The committee added: We all have a legal, national and moral duty to deal firmly with this phenomenon, each according to his position in society, and for this reason, the House of Representatives issued a number of measures supporting the executive and judicial authority, the most prominent of which is the formation of a parliamentary committee concerned with combating narcotics and psychotropic substances, No. 50 of 2017 and coordination with the Supreme Judicial Council and the concerned authorities to ensure a review of the description of drug crimes and the tightening of the penalty for trafficking in them to death, and the reorganization of committees for examination, preservation and destruction of drug materials, and a periodic examination of state employees, security services and university students to ensure their safety, and the establishment of an independent administrative apparatus linked to the Prime Minister specialized in drug control.

The committee called on everyone to cooperate with it, especially the media, in order to educate citizens about the danger of drugs to humans and society, based on the approach to combating drugs, a collective decision./ End
