Gaza Health Director-General to QNA: Hospitals Largely Overwhelmed, Lack Medical Potential

Gaza: The Palestinian Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip has issued a warning regarding the deteriorating healthcare situation in the region. The repeated targeting of medical facilities and hospitals by Israeli forces is severely impacting healthcare services, particularly due to the disruption of medical supplies and the obstruction of field hospitals entering the enclave.

According to Qatar News Agency, Dr. Munir Al Barsh, Director-General of the Ministry of Health in the Gaza Strip, highlighted a recent incident where Israeli forces targeted the surgery department at Nasser medical facility in Khan Younis. This attack resulted in the death of two injured individuals who were receiving treatment and caused a large fire that destroyed medical equipment on the second floor.

Al Barsh emphasized the panic and distress caused by the attack among patients and medical staff. He accused Israel of deliberately targeting medical facilities as part of its aggression on Gaza, which poses a significant threat to the already strained health system.

The situation in Gaza is dire, with hospitals overwhelmed by the high number of trauma cases and a severe shortage of medical equipment. Al Barsh reported that 7 percent of Gaza’s population has been affected by the ongoing conflict, with numerous casualties and injuries since October 7, 2023.

Al Barsh shared that the conflict has resulted in 50,082 deaths and approximately 113,408 injuries, with a significant number requiring long-term care. Among the deceased, 15,613 were children, and many of the injured, including around 850 children, have suffered amputations.

The conflict resumed on March 18, following a ceasefire that lasted from January 19, 2025. The ongoing hostilities continue to exacerbate the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, severely affecting health and humanitarian efforts.
