HM the King’s call to criminalize hate speech and contempt of religion wins international praise, Speaker

Council of Representatives Speaker, IPU 146th Assembly Chairman, Ahmed bin Salman Al Musallam hailed His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s keynote speech at the opening of the IPU 146th Assembly.

He stressed the importance of the royal call to build a more just and equitable global political, security and economic system, strengthen legislative and technical cooperation, and approve an international agreement to criminalize religious, sectarian and racist hate speech in all its forms, and to prevent the abuse of freedoms and media and digital platforms in contempt of religions.

“The royal call represents an innate human goal, and an urgent international demand, in light of the repercussions of hatred, enmity, wars and conflicts the world is facing, and the challenges targeting its security and stability”, he said.

He urged multilateral cooperation, under the umbrella of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, to adopt these important theses in order to reach a unified guiding vision that reflects on the national legislation and positions of the member parliaments.

Addressing the final session of the the IPU 146th Assembly, Al Musallam attributed the success of the event to the support of HM the King and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

He noted the importance of inter-parliamentary meetings to implement the goals of sustainable development, address challenges, pointing out that the future of humanity depends on collective action.

He called for international partnership to enforce dialogue, empower the rule of law and mutual respect, and secure firm stances against all external interference in the internal affairs of states.
