Italian Defense Minister Advocates for NATO’s Evolution and Increased Engagement

Rome: Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto emphasized the need for NATO to evolve by becoming more open and engaging in dialogue with countries sharing similar values, interests, and visions. He made these remarks during the Mediterranean and Middle East Special Group seminar of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, underscoring the inseparable dimensions of security, development, and stability with a focus on the Southern Flank.

According to Qatar News Agency, Crosetto highlighted the importance of Europe extending its defense efforts beyond the 27 Member States, urging the involvement of other continental nations to collectively address complex threats. He stressed the necessity for Europe to share responsibilities and security, calling for a collaborative approach in enhancing defensive capabilities.

Crosetto also emphasized the need for a redefined NATO that is proactive in anticipating crises, particularly those originating from the Southern Flank. He identified Africa as a strategic priority, acknowledging its young population, resource wealth, and potential, while recognizing the continent's ongoing economic, social, and institutional challenges.
