Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on Thursday for the State of Palestine to assume its responsibilities in the Gaza Strip, including the border crossings, most notably the Rafah International Crossing between Egypt and Palestine. Abbas said in his speech before the United Nations General Assembly regarding what needs to be done now and the day after the war, "We demand that the State of Palestine assume its responsibilities in the Strip to exercise its full jurisdiction over it, including the border crossings, most notably the Rafah International Crossing between Egypt and Palestine, as part of a comprehensive plan." The Palestinian president called for the adoption of international peacekeeping forces by a Security Council resolution between the State of Palestine and Israel to ensure the security of the two states, considering that the goal of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is to displace the people of the West Bank to Jordan and the people of Gaza to Egypt, which was rejected by the t wo countries and the Palestinian people. Abbas stressed that Israel is committing war crimes against the Palestinians and has reoccupied the Gaza Strip and made it uninhabitable, calling for a comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. He said: Before the eyes of the General Assembly, "The Israeli government exploited what happened on October 7 to launch a comprehensive war of genocide on the Gaza Strip, and has committed and continues to commit war crimes recognized by the international community," adding, "Stop this crime, stop killing children and women. Stop the war of extermination. Stop sending weapons to Israel, and the entire world bears responsibility for what is happening in Gaza." He continued, "Israel has reoccupied the entire Gaza Strip and almost completely destroyed it, so that it has become an uninhabitable place," stressing, "We demand a comprehensive ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the military attacks and terrorist settler attacks in the West Bank and East Al-Quds." Abbas indicated his intention to visit the Gaza Strip, saying, "I appeal to you to support our decision by issuing a UN resolution in this regard and to pressure the occupation government so that it does not obstruct our endeavors." With full American support, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, leaving more than 137,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amidst massive destruction and deadly famine.
