Twenty students of the Philippine School Bahrain (PSB) participated in the Newswriting Seminar-Workshop organized by the "Ang Tanglaw", the official student publication of PSB.
The goal of the workshop was to increase the student’s knowledge of the wide range of campus journalism opportunities available to them. It also aimed to help the students gain a better understanding of how journalism actually operates in the present times and in a campus setting.
Award-winning journalist Nanju Francisco was the resource speaker while the moderators were Jennifer A. Torres and Kebin D. Gayados. Filipino Writers’ Circle Founder Cecil V.
Ancheta and Photojournalist Emmanuel "Von" Francisco also graced the event.
During the two-hour workshop, Francisco discussed the principles and elements of Newswriting, Interviews, Pitching Stories and Photo Lay-outing. The participants were given knowledge about how to get ready for journalism's various platforms today including TV, radio, print, and digital, as well as mastering the craft of reporting, story-telling and lay-outing.
It also helped to keep the participants up-to-date on the most recent trends, strategies, and guiding principles of journalistic writing. Additionally, it emphasized the right to have access to the knowledge, information, and data needed to support journalistic values.
"I'm hoping that this workshop will assist participants to become better at writing in a journalistic manner that upholds one of journalism's core principles: truth and accuracy," Francisco said.
At the end of each topic, the students were given a test to find out what they had learned during the workshop. The highlight of the workshop was the recitation of the Journalist’s Code of Ethics by the participants.
