Qatar Endorses Reappointment of WIPO Director-General in Geneva

Geneva: The State of Qatar participated in the 67th Series of Meetings of the Assemblies of the Member States of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), held in Geneva, focusing on confirming the appointment of the Director-General of the Organization.

According to Qatar News Agency, the delegation from Qatar was led by HE Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the UN Office in Geneva, Dr. Hind Abdulrahman Al Muftah. During the meeting, she expressed Qatar's support for the reappointment of HE Daren Tang of Singapore as Director-General of the WIPO for a second term. Her Excellency commended Tang's leadership and highlighted the international recognition of his efforts, particularly the successful conclusion of the "Treaty on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources" and the "Design Law Treaty."

Her Excellency also discussed the development of bilateral relations between Qatar and the WIPO, emphasizing the progress made during Tang's first term. She noted the significant strides taken in modernizing Qatar's intellectual property system, including the development of the "National Intellectual Property Strategy" and Qatar's accession to several new intellectual property agreements. Furthermore, memoranda of understanding were signed to enhance academic and technical cooperation.

Dr. Al Muftah reaffirmed Qatar's commitment to supporting WIPO's efforts and activities, aiming to strengthen the partnership in Tang's new term. She emphasized the importance of intellectual property in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and in maximizing economic and social benefits for member states.
