Qatar Engages in Strategic Discussions at MENAFATF’s 42nd Plenary

Rabat: The State of Qatar, represented by the National Anti-Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing Committee (NAMLC) and the Qatar Financial Information Unit (QFIU), took part in the 42nd Plenary of the Middle East and North Africa Financial Action Task Force (MENAFATF). The event was held in Rabat, Morocco, with participation from member countries and relevant regional and international organizations.

According to Qatar News Agency, the Qatari delegation was led by Sheikh Abdullah bin Hamad bin Mubarak Al-Thani, Head of QFIU and a member of NAMLC, and NAMLC Secretary Mohammed Sareea Rashid Al Kaabi. The delegation also included various experts and participants from Qatar.

The Plenary addressed several technical and strategic topics related to boosting the Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Combating the Financing of Terrorism (CFT), and Countering Proliferation Financing (CPF) systems. Key discussions focused on enhanced follow-up reports, preparations for the third round of mutual evaluations, and the exchange of experiences and expertise among member countries. The agenda also covered MENAFATF's action plans and collaboration with relevant regional and international organizations and centers.

Decisions and recommendations adopted at the Plenary aimed to improve the effectiveness of national systems within member countries. These measures support regional efforts to tackle emerging threats and risks associated with money laundering (ML), terrorist financing (TF), and proliferation financing (PF) crimes, aligning with international standards and best practices.

Ahead of the Plenary, remote meetings involving various working groups, committees, and forums associated with MENAFATF were conducted. These meetings focused on discussing the technical topics on the Plenary agenda and formulating relevant recommendations.

Qatar's participation underscores its commitment to supporting MENAFATF's efforts and enhancing regional and international cooperation. This involvement contributes to the advancement of Qatar's national system and its alignment with international standards set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), in addition to strengthening national measures in combating ML, TF, and PF crimes.
