Kuwait- Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim and Hamdi Ali shared the high jump gold medal at the third edition of the GCC Games in Kuwait on Wednesday.
Mutaz and Hamdi each cleared 2.15M. There was nothing to separate the reigning world and Olympic champion from his compatriot and they shared the title. It was one of four gold medals won by Qatar on the day.
Saudi Arabia’s Ahmed Abdullah Altarouti (2.10) took the third spot.
Wednesday's competitions were attended by H.E Secretary General of the Qatar Olympic Committee Jassim bin Rashid Al Buenain.
Qatari runners Abdirahman Hassan and Musaab Ali also did the nation proud, finishing first and second in the 1500M.
Abdirahman timed 4mins 02.80secs, more than a second faster than Musaab (4:04.20) and Kuwait’s Khaled Alharbi (4:06.36).
Ahmed Amjad Elsaify claimed the hammer throw gold with a 69.40M throw, leaving Kuwait’s Ali Zankawi (66.97) and Bahrain’s Mahmoud Elgohary (64.68) behind.
The Qatar men’s 4x400M relay team finished third (3:07.27), behind Bahrain (3:06.20) and Saudi Arabia (3:06.37).
Meanwhile, Qatari women athletes Lial Tamam (3,405 points) and Saja Saadoun (3,050) finished second and third in heptathlon.
Rania Al Naji claimed silver in women’s hammer throw with a 47M heave. Oman’s Hana Touqi (49.36) and the UAE’s Wedad Robari (40.63) finished in first and third positions.
Qatari swimmers took home a silver and three bronze medals on the day.
The 4x400M freestyle relay team — consisting of Firas Saidi, Abdulaziz Al Obaidly, Ali Al Nuaimi and Mohamed Mohamed — finished second in 3:35.07, behind Kuwait (3:31.02).
Qatar had begun the day with a 100M butterfly bronze from Mohamed (55.66).
In 800M freestyle, Kareem Salah (9:00.46) claimed bronze.
Yousef Abouelela (1:00.22) was also third, in the 100M backstroke.
The Qatar men’s basketball team suffered another reverse in Group A, losing to Bahrain 77-90.
Qatar, who clinched four gold, four silver and five bronze medals on Wednesday, took their overall tally to 10 gold, 10 silver and eight bronze medals. They are behind Bahrain (17, 14, 7) and Kuwait (13, 13, 15) in the standings.
