RETURN TO SENDERS sprints to Umm Al Afai Cup victory

Nasser Saeed Al Eida’s RETURN TO SENDERS (Sir Prancealot x Bougainvilla) went one better than his last outing to win for the first time this season, landing the UMM AL AFAI CUP (THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 3) Rated 75 – 95) at Al Rayyan Park on Wednesday. The 4yo colt had not finished outside the top five since January 2020 when the bay colt had won the Marmi Cup on dirt. On Wednesday, in the dirt feature, JP Guillambert partnered with the Gassim Ghazali trained colt and the duo put up a determined run on the straight to win the 1100m sprint with one and a half lengths to spare, holding off an Al Jasra Stud duo saddled by Ahmed Kobeissi. Ivan Rossi rode SHOBROM (Acclamation x Strasbourg Place) to runner up finish, while Faleh Bughanaim was on CHATTANOOGA BOY (Acclamation x Sign From Heaven) to third.

Injaaz Stud’s LEKHRAIB (AF AlBahar x Grace T) improved his strike rate this season, racing to his fourth victory from six outings this terms so far. His latest win was in the PUREBRED ARABIAN CONDITIONS on Wednesday where he partnered with Ali Khalid Al Mosallam. Saddled by Mohammed Ghazali, the 7yo chestnut landed the six furlong sprint with ease finishing a dominant five lengths ahead of Soufiane Saadi ridden Ateej, showing versatility, having landed a 1700m feature last time round.

Abdulaziz Hamad Al Marri’s LAMA (Hatteen x Ahazeej) bounced back from a forgettable outing last time round to win for the third time this season, with all of the victories for the mare happening under Ali Khalid Al Mosallam. The win in the LOCAL PUREBRED ARABIANS (Fillies & Mares) (4yo & older) was the apprentice rider’s second yesterday. In the six furlong sprint, Lama beat Saleh Salem Al Marri ridden Qoot by two lengths and three quarters for a comfortable entry.

RODEYNA (Intense Focus x Hidden Meaning) completed a hat-trick for the colours of Injaaz Stud when the Mohammed Ghazali trained mare won the LOCAL THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (85 & below) in a cozy finish to the 1700m run. With JP Guillambert in the saddle, the 6yo branded a not-so-impressive outing in a miler last time as a mere blip with a great run on the straight on Wednesday. The bay mare beat Killian Leonard ridden Sarmad Bu Thaila by a four lengths and a quarter.

Injaaz Stud’s MUTHHIL (Amer x New Princess) led a one-two for trainer Gassim Ghazali when the Qatar bred 6yo bagged the PUREBRED ARABIAN HANDICAP (80 & below) in a fine finish to the 1700m run on Wednesday. Helmed by Qatari apprentice jockey Saleh Salem Al Marri, the grey horse went one better than his last start to enter the winner’s circle for the second time this season. Muthhil beat Marco Casamento ridden Anees by two lengths at the post for the victory.

Injaaz Stud’s KHAFOOQ (Kodiac x Al Manaal) raced to his second C&D victory in Qatar when the Gassim Ghazali saddled gelding landed the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 4) (80 & below) in dominant fashion on Wednesday. Helmed by Marco Casamento for the third straight start, the 5yo held off a duo saddled by Zuhair Mohsen at the post in the six furlong sprint. Soufiane Saadi ridden Superior Moment was runner up six lengths behind the winner, while another Injaaz Stud contender, Inde, was ridden to third by Michael Forest.

Qatari rider Meshaal Abdlatif Al Mohannadi registered his first career victory when the apprentice rider rode the winner in the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 5) (QATARI RIDERS ONLY) (Div 2) (70 & below). Ahmed Hassan Al Malki Al Jehani’s JURZ (Exceed And Excel x Bahja) brushed aside a bunch of forgettable finishes as Al Mohannadi rode the Hamad Al Jehani trained horse to a close victory in the 1900m run on dirt. The duo went past the post three quarters of a length in front of Abdulla Saleh Al Yafei ridden Pinatar.

Rashid Bin Mubarak Aljafali Al Naimi’s BETTER THAN EVER (Mainsail x Better Chance) has shown promise and consistency this season with the Majed Seifeddine-trained gelding never finishing outside the top three this term. That run continued on Wednesday as the 5yo raced to his second victory of the season when Rashid Ali Al Marri guided the gelding to a dominant win in the THOROUGHBRED HANDICAP (Class 5) (QATARI RIDERS ONLY) (Div 1) (70 & below). The duo landed the 1900m run on dirt with six and a half lengths to spare.

Yousuf Mubarak Al Kuwari’s I AM THUNDER (Night Of Thunder x Martine’s Spirit) went one better than his last time round to land his first career victory on Wednesday. Helmed by Ali Khalid al-Mosallam for the third straight time, the Hamad Al Jehani trained colt lined up in the six furlong THOROUGHBRED MAIDEN PLATE (Class 6) sprint from gate 2. A fantastic ride by the apprentice rider saw the 4yo win with two lengths and three quarters to spare, beating Marco Casamento ridden Swagger for the victory.

Qatari jockey Saleh Salem Al Marri continued with what has been his best season so far when he rode his 15th winner of the season on Wednesday. In the LOCAL PUREBRED ARABIAN NOVICE PLATE, the apprentice rider guided Khalid Rashid Al Mohannadi’s STAM AL NAIF (Djelmidor x Hadab Al Naif) to a fine victory. Rashid Al Jehani saddled 9yo had last won in the April of 2017 over C&D. On Wednesday, the bay horse won the six furlong sprint with one and a half lengths to spare.
