Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan confirmed that his country is waiting for Sweden to fulfill its obligations in order to agree to its accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
Erdogan said during his participation today, Friday, in a graduation ceremony for officers in Istanbul: "How can Turkey trust a country where terrorists roam its streets?"
He added, "How can a country that does not put a distance between it and terrorist organizations make contributions to NATO?"
Erdogan pointed out that very few allies have made the contributions Turkey has made to NATO in the past 71 years.
In his speech, the Turkish president stressed that his country is waiting to observe the commitments made to it at the Madrid Conference in the tripartite memorandum regarding Sweden and Finland's accession to NATO.
On June 28 of last year, Sweden and Finland signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding with Turkey regarding its accession to NATO, after they pledged to respond to Ankara's demands regarding cooperation in the fight against terrorism. In late March, Turkey ratified Finland's accession to NATO, while it has reservations about Sweden's membership and calls on it to cooperate and take concrete steps in the matter of extraditing wanted terrorists to the Turkish judiciary.
