Antofagasta: A 4.6-magnitude earthquake struck Antofagasta Province in northern Chile on Tuesday.
According to Qatar News Agency, the US Geological Survey stated that the epicenter of the earthquake was located 129 kilometers northeast of the city of San Pedro de Atacama, with a depth of 183.5 kilometers. Fortunately, there have been no reports of material or human damage resulting from the earthquake so far.
Historically, Chile has experienced significant seismic activity. In 2010, the country was hit by an 8.8-magnitude earthquake followed by a devastating tsunami, which claimed the lives of 500 individuals. Chile’s geographical location places it in the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of faults encircling the Pacific Ocean basin, making it susceptible to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
