5.4-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Western Chile

Santiago: An earthquake measuring 5.4 magnitude on the Richter scale struck western Chile on Monday.

According to Qatar News Agency, the epicenter was at a depth of 10 km, as reported by the US Geological Survey (USGS).

In 2010, an 8.8 magnitude earthquake, followed by a tsunami, struck central and southern Chile, resulting in the deaths of 500 people.

Chile is situated in the Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines encircling the Pacific Ocean basin, which is prone to frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity.
