Doha: Assistant Director of the Agricultural Affairs Department at the Ministry of Municipality, Adel Al Yafei, stated that the growing demand for local products during Ramadan at local produce sale yards reflects consumers’ high level of satisfaction and growing trust in these marketplaces, as key sources for fresh vegetables and local products.
According to Qatar News Agency, Al Yafei mentioned that these farmer’s markets have undergone significant development and gained traction since their establishment in 2012, especially as service and product quality were improved. He highlighted that the local produce sale yards reduce the number of intermediaries, offer competitive prices, preserve the nutritional value of produce, increase farmers’ profitability by up to 40 percent, and support a sustainable and flexible diet. Additionally, they contribute to supporting local production and promoting local produce.
Al Yafei pointed out that Ramadan this year occurs in March, which is the peak of agricultural production in Qatar. He added that the opening hours for local produce sale yards during Ramadan are as follows: Farmer’s markets at Al Khor, Al Dhakira, Al Shamal, Al Wakrah, and Al Shahania are open from 19:00 to 23:00 on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Meanwhile, the Al Mazrouah farmer’s market in Umm Salal central market is open daily from 06:00 to 23:00.
He also noted a number of initiatives to regulate prices during Ramadan, ensuring products are attainable at reasonable prices for all. Coordination with relevant authorities is underway to ensure farm owners adhere to the fixed price list while maintaining product quality, thereby balancing the interests of producers and consumers.
Furthermore, the Assistant Director highlighted an initiative held in cooperation with Hifz Al Naema Center to distribute local vegetables to low-income families. Additionally, marketing outlets for low-income, home-based businesses are provided within these sale yards.
